I’ve seen and heard the phrase, “a little love is all it takes”, many times, most recently in the picture above.
I beg to differ. A little love is NOT all it takes. It takes A LOT of love.
I’m a mother and a wife, and it takes more than a little love to raise my kids.
I’m a Christian, and it takes a lot more than “a little love” to be a good one. It took Jesus much more than “a little love” to come down to earth and be crucified for our sake. And it takes the ordinary Christian much more than a little love to live their faith each day.
I’m an educator. We’ve been here in Iraq working on opening a new school, training teachers and applying for international accreditation for the past two years… And it’s taken A LOT of love. I believe every teacher and faculty member involved would say the same thing.
And the list goes on. Helping a friend or relative when you’re up to your neck in your own responsibilities takes more than a little love.
I’m not trying to be a party-pooper here. Again, I don’t want to discourage anyone from putting out whatever love they have, be it little or great. Love itself is a great thing. But I think it’s a little misleading to say that “a little love is all it takes”. A little love is all it takes to get going, but then we need to multiply that love, over and over and over again.
I don’t know that this has any grounding in theology, but I think it is true of human experience: when you just give a little bit of love, you’re left with just a little less in your heart. But when you give A LOT of love toward something important to you, and empty your heart completely, it fills right back up. You find that you have even more love than you started out with, and it just keeps going that way. You never run out… So don’t be afraid to give a lot of love – it makes a big difference!
